AUSTIN – (Realty News Report) – Samsung Electronics and local government officials are discussing incentives to build a $17 billion semiconductor factory in Taylor, Texas, a town about 30 miles northeast of downtown Austin.
According to a proposal filed with Williamson County, the planned Samsung facility would include roughly 6 million square feet of buildings on a 1,200‑acre site owned by Samsung.
The facility is expected to employ about 1,800 people and produce advanced semiconductors to help address a global shortage that has constrained multiple industries, including automotive manufacturing.
The proposed Taylor site sits east of Interstate 35 and about 15 miles from Round Rock, home to computer manufacturer Dell.
The addition of a Samsung semiconductor plant would bolster the Austin area’s reputation as a technology hub, which already hosts operations from companies such as Apple, Advanced Micro Devices, Oracle, Google and Facebook.
Samsung has indicated plans to break ground in the first quarter of 2022 with production targeted to begin in 2024, but the company told the Austin Business Journal that it continues to evaluate several potential locations and that no final decision with Taylor officials has been made.
Seoul‑based Samsung has confirmed it is considering sites in Arizona, New York, South Korea and in Travis County near Austin, where it currently operates another facility.
The Taylor property in Williamson County is located south of US Highway 79 and west of FM 973.
A draft of the Williamson County development agreement notes that the project would likely serve as a significant economic stimulus for the area, generating job growth and increasing tax revenue for the county, the Taylor Independent School District and the City of Taylor.
The unsigned document, titled Williamson County Development Agreement, outlines potential obligations between the county and Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC.
Planned improvements include upgrades to roadways and infrastructure surrounding the factory, along with tax incentives proposed for Samsung.
Separately, a large Tesla manufacturing facility—planned at about 4 million square feet—is already under construction in east Austin, underscoring ongoing industrial growth in the region.
