LA MARQUE, Texas – (Realty News Report) – Amazon Logistics will open a 180,000-square-foot delivery station in La Marque to handle last-mile deliveries throughout Galveston County, south of Houston.
The new Amazon delivery station will be located at 4975 Gulf Freeway, just south of Gulfway Plaza and north of Team Mancuso Powersports, close to the Abundant Life Christian Center.
“The City of La Marque is proud that Amazon chose to call us home for this distribution center. The additional jobs within our city will provide meaningful new opportunities for our residents. Today’s announcement is the culmination of months of work. We are both humbled by and proud of Amazon’s decision to come to our city and call La Marque home for this distribution center,” said Tink Jackson, La Marque City Manager.
Amazon expects the last-mile facility to open later in 2021. The company already operates more than 150 delivery stations across the United States.
“We are excited to continue investing in Texas with a new delivery station in La Marque that will create hundreds of job opportunities and provide faster, more efficient delivery for customers. We look forward to continued growth in Texas and thank local and state leaders for their support in making this project possible,” said Daniel Martin, an Amazon spokesperson.
Amazon has accelerated its expansion as consumers increasingly rely on online shopping during the pandemic. The Seattle-based company is developing more than 1,000 new distribution facilities nationwide, including several in the Greater Houston area.
As of last week, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos was the world’s richest person, with an estimated net worth of $191.5 billion. Amazon’s market capitalization is roughly $1.69 trillion.
La Marque is about 10 miles from Galveston and roughly 30 miles from Houston.
Delivery stations serve as the final stage in Amazon’s order process, improving delivery efficiency. Packages arrive at delivery stations from nearby Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers and are loaded into vehicles for final delivery to customers.
Properties leased to Amazon have become attractive investments for real estate buyers and institutional investors.
Recently, two large Amazon warehouses in the West Houston area changed hands. Walton Street Capital acquired an 806,000-square-foot Amazon distribution building on Clay Road in Katy, near the Grand Parkway. In another transaction, Exan Capital, a Miami-based investment firm, purchased a 1 million-square-foot Amazon fulfillment center in Brookshire at 31555 Highway 90. Both buildings were developed and sold by Duke Realty.
