KATY, Texas – (By Michelle Leigh Smith) – Embracing the motto “go big or go home,” the Katy community gathered to preview the new $72 million Legacy Stadium, which is reportedly the most expensive high school stadium ever constructed.
One of the first indications that this is an exceptional venue is the wayfinding and graphics system by architect HKS, Inc. The signage avoids a sterile institutional look and instead strengthens the stadium’s sense of place while creating sponsorship opportunities. At the Home Entry, the Heritage Hall honors past Katy Independent School District (KISD) legends.
The upper stands include a mezzanine at porch level, just below the press box, which provides elevator access for seniors and other patrons. The mezzanine also serves as a judging platform for band competitions and creates a transparent feeling when viewing the home stands from across the field, says Mark Vander Voort, Principal and Senior Vice President of HKS.
A distinctive architectural feature is the perforated metal screen walls that wrap the concourse. “This screen enclosure protects the concourse areas from the late-afternoon western sun and from inclement weather,” Vander Voort explains.
From inside the concourse, the screen frames views of clouds and sky and the layered overlaps of its elements. From the outside it reads as a series of overlapping planes, producing a striking façade. At night, colored LED lighting illuminates the screens and can be adjusted to display the home team’s colors. Because KISD has eight high schools that must be honored equally, this lighting capability adds new meaning to “Friday Night Lights.”
Located roughly 30 miles west of downtown Houston and west of the Grand Parkway, the stadium was designed by Dallas-based HKS Inc. with Fort Worth-based VLK Architects as associate architect. The design celebrates community spirit in an inspiring architectural form and represents a new era of high-performance venues in Texas.
One major design challenge was providing an open concourse while ensuring easy patron access. Instead of elevating the concourse a full story above grade, the stadium was recessed into the ground and surrounding parking, drives, and sidewalks were raised on imported fill. This approach simplified pedestrian flow into the main entrances and produced significant site development savings despite logistical challenges, says Vander Voort.
The site also includes a land bridge connecting the pre-existing Rhodes Stadium with the new Legacy Stadium. The two sites were separated by a wide canal or drainage easement; the design team worked with the County to construct a land bridge over the easement, linking both facilities for improved services, access, and safety. The park-like bridge creates a plaza for community gatherings such as art fairs, carnivals, bazaars, and other outdoor events.
Traffic management and circulation were central to the planning. Although the site is well positioned for vehicle access, offsite infrastructure and street improvements were needed to ensure proper flow. On-site, separate service loops for each stadium handle team buses, service and emergency vehicles, and VIP access. Parking areas are arranged to fill and disperse quickly to accommodate multiple events on the same day.
Other notable features include:
LED Sports Lighting – Modern, energy-efficient lighting optimized for video and field play.
Distributed Sound Systems – A networked audio layout replaces large directional speakers to provide clearer, more pleasant acoustics.
Band Plaza – Located at the north end, opposite the fieldhouse, the plaza supports band mobilization and field access. Two tunnels allow one band to enter the field while another exits, and dedicated restrooms serve band members so they do not need to climb into the stands.
Parent Drop-Off Lane – Positioned safely between the two stadiums so parents can drop off and pick up students without entering the main parking lots.
Adjustable Concession Points of Sale – Flexible service stations reduce wait times and improve flow.
Automated Parking Lot Lighting and Video Monitoring – Enhances safety and surveillance on-site.
Turf – State-of-the-art infilled turf installed for durability and performance.
Fully Digital Scoreboard and a student-managed Live-Action Media Broadcast System (LAMBS) support high-quality game presentation and student media opportunities.
After nearly two years of construction, Katy ISD welcomed parents, students, and community members to Mike Johnston Field at Legacy Stadium with performances from all eight high school bands and choir directors. The ceremony echoed across the field as the community marked a historic moment for Katy ISD and the city of Katy.
The site has been master-planned as a park-like community venue. The name Legacy Stadium was selected by a community-led naming committee as a tribute to the district’s history of excellence and tradition.
A cherished element from the beloved Rhodes Stadium—a north end zone berm—was incorporated into Legacy Stadium. Families can continue the nostalgic tradition of bringing a blanket to sit on the berm and enjoy games and other activities.
The plaza and green space between the two stadiums are designed to host art fairs, exhibits, and a variety of outdoor gatherings, reinforcing the complex’s role as a year-round community asset.
Legacy Stadium was approved by voters as part of the 2014 bond program to provide Katy ISD with a state-of-the-art multipurpose second stadium. Built as part of a zero tax rate increase bond, the stadium serves the district’s more than 77,000 students, their families, and local residents as an athletic and fine-arts venue.
- The stadium is intended for year-round use—football games, soccer tournaments, band competitions, and other community events.
- The design creates an immersive experience by positioning the elevated upper seating closer to the field, enhancing intimacy for fans, athletes, and performers.
- An open concourse allows patrons to maintain sightlines to the field even while visiting concessions and amenities.
- A 50-foot-tall, 200-foot-long perforated metal screen shields spectators from the western sun and weather while offering the option of colored LED illumination to celebrate the home team.
- A signature press box above the home stands features a tapered roof that crowns the complex. The one-story press box provides space for coaches, media, and operations staff, and two hospitality suites offer exceptional views of the field and the surrounding city.
- A 60-foot by 25-foot state-of-the-art scoreboard anchors the north end of the field.
- The fieldhouse at the south end zone includes multipurpose space that overlooks the field and serves as a flexible venue within the stadium. A patio deck with fixed seating can be configured for district and community events.
Expect a broad range of activities at Legacy Stadium: soccer, marching band competitions, concerts, youth football, lacrosse, rugby, college football camps, parent group meetings, banquets, movie nights, and other community celebrations. And on fall Friday nights, look forward to top-tier high school football under the lights.
