HOUSTON – Work & Mother Services, a network of fully equipped lactation and pumping facilities that also provides community and educational resources for working mothers, has signed a lease for space at the Three Allen Center building in downtown Houston.
The new Work & Mother location at Three Allen Center, 333 Clay St., will be the company’s second Houston facility and will add a valuable amenity to the Allen Center campus. The center will make it easier for employers to support nursing employees and will help Brookfield Properties’ tenants comply with Section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which requires employers to provide a private, non-bathroom place for nursing mothers to express milk during the workday.
“We are thrilled to partner with Brookfield Properties on this project,” said Abbey Donnell, founder and CEO of Work & Mother. “Many companies are not set up to handle such a private, personal need within their existing office footprints. Rather than each employer retrofit space individually, a dedicated shared facility is a more economical and effective solution: it reduces legal exposure, improves workplace conditions for nursing parents, and allows companies to preserve their leased space for core business functions.”
Work & Mother is collaborating with Will Holliday, Director of Construction for Brookfield Properties, and PDR Architects to build the new center. The facility will include ten private rooms, hospital-grade pumps and equipment, and additional support resources. Several rooms will feature workstations that, together with hands-free pumping options, let mothers continue productive work during pumping sessions.
“We’re very excited about the Allen Center location,” Donnell added. “Brookfield Properties has been a great partner. They understand how workplaces are evolving and have shown a real commitment to supporting working families.”
Membership is reciprocal across Work & Mother locations, so members enrolled at one site can use facilities at other centers. Work & Mother is pre-enrolling companies for the Allen Center location. While the site is scheduled to open in late spring 2020, classes and community events will begin this fall.
Brookfield Properties was represented in the 949-square-foot lease by Clint Bawcom and Tyler Merritt of Brookfield Properties.
“We are pleased to welcome Work & Mother to Three Allen Center,” said Travis Overall, Executive Vice President and Head of the Texas Region for Brookfield Properties. “This concept is a welcome addition to Allen Center for the many working mothers across our campus.”
