Hermann Dog Park Opens: A New Off-Leash Play Area for Pups

HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – Hermann Park is getting a dedicated dog park as part of a new master plan developed by the Hermann Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, with landscape architecture by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc.

Officials and several canine “ambassadors” broke ground Tuesday on the McWilliams Dog Park, a $2 million project. The dog park will occupy a 1.5-acre fenced area within a 2.5-acre site bordered by Brays Bayou and South MacGregor Drive.

A dedicated dog park was the most requested new amenity in user studies conducted in 2016 by the Conservancy and Rice University as part of the master planning process.

Lauren Griffith Associates, the landscape firm that updated Hermann Park’s trail system in 2011, designed the McWilliams Dog Park. Beyond providing a place for dogs and their owners, the redesigned site will improve access to Hermann Park and strengthen connections between existing public spaces. The dog park sits adjacent to the Brays Bayou Greenways Trail and is close to existing parking.

Off-Leash Space and Amenities on 1.5 Acres

The off-leash park will feature one of the largest interactive water elements for dogs in the city, canine agility equipment, natural shade, a rain garden, and native plantings to support sustainable landscaping. The design prioritizes user comfort and ecological function while creating a welcoming environment for park visitors and their pets.

The McWilliams Dog Park is the first construction project in the implementation of Hermann Park’s 20-year master plan, a public–private partnership between the City of Houston and the Hermann Park Conservancy. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is contributing $896,000 in public funding toward the park’s lighting and water services.

Construction is expected to be completed this winter, according to project materials.
