Hermann Park Revamp Launches, Market briefs

Forecast Ranks Houston as No. 3 in US

In Houston, Following a massive two-year makeover and re-imagining of public space, The Commons at Hermann Park has opened on 26 much improved acres within the city’s 445-acre park near Texas Medical Center, Rice University and the Museum District.

As both a destination geared to all ages and a gateway into Hermann Park on its southwest corner, the new venue brings a plethora of playscapes, playful diversions, plus ample stroller parking, hangout space and a six-acre Welcome Garden of peaceful respite geared to nearby patients and healthcare workers.

In addition to creating imaginative play landscapes, the project also transformed the park’s nearby natural habitat, adding 200,000 new plants and trees plus a section for crop rotation that will restore the soil.

A cafe will join reboot’s amenities later this summer.

The Commons is part of Hermann Park Conservancy’s 20-year master plan by Marlon Blackwell Architects with landscape architects Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates.

Formerly the Site was what project materials described the original site as “under-utilized and virtually ignored by the public, creating congestion and over-utilization in other parts of the park.”

That was before the recently completed revitalization.

For Space City’s Children

As launched earlier this month, the new Playground for All Children offers accessible and thematic playscapes designed for children of all abilities. All spaces encourage physical, sensory and social experiences, as well as good old-fashioned fun.

At its core, the revamped playground has a hard-to-miss 45-foot-tall rocket ship slide and a space capsule for climbing and equally whimsical climbable coves for the toddler crowd.

And there’s a 12-foot hill, meaning some actual elevation for Houston’s pervasive flatlands. It’s a handy vantage point for adults keeping watch.

SPLASHDOWN

Water play elements pepper the venue’s coves and walkways for cooling relief. A meandering “bayouscape”, separate from the Space Age playground, mimics Houston water system, allowing exploration of water dynamics (translation: get wet). Its water, potable, flows through a new wetlands garden, where is cleaned as it flows to McGovern Lake for use in park irrigation.

Shade canopies and seating abound throughout the improvements, which were in full gear on Earth Day. The project’s other amenities include a classic carousel, a hill of old school swings, a central lawn for gatherings, more grills and picnic areas, and an expanded, refurbished Historic Fannin Pavilion with food truck court.

The Commons is one of three projects funded by the Conservancy’s $52 million Play Your Park campaign.

Hermann Park has more than 6 million visitors a year. Hermann Park Conservancy and Houston Parks and Recreation Department are stewards of the park. A public-private partnership between them has completed $125 million in park improvements.
