New Houston Hotel Opens

In Houston, American Liberty Hospitality will open a 10-story hotel property on the Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus at 6840 Almeda Road, near Holcombe Blvd. on Thursday.

The 300-room hotel, located across the street from the former Nabisco factory, is dual-branded with a Hilton Garden Inn and Home2 Suites by Hilton.

The hotel property is located on the federal VA property at the Texas Medical Center.

“We’re honored to be on the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus, surrounded by some of the top medical institutions on the planet,” said Nick Massad III, senior vice president of development at American Liberty Hospitality. “Our hotel has been designed to meet the special needs of this unique medical community and was developed, in part, to enhance the campus and help better serve our cherished vets.”

Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center is affiliated with and operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and is one of the department’s largest hospitals, serving Harris County and 27 surrounding counties.

Buy Local; Build Local

The Houston-based American Liberty is led by Nick Massad Jr., a benefactor of the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Earlier this year, the firm opened another high-rise, dual-branded hotel along Loop 610 near the Galleria.

American Liberty says it maintains “a focus in supporting local business.” Therefore, it is notable that Houston-based MCS Architects designed the new hotel tower and Houston-based Arch-Con Corporation served as the general contractor.

The new property will have 143 extended-stay suites at Home2 Suites with a full-size refrigerator with ice maker, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishwasher and kitchenware. Hilton Garden Inn is set to feature 157 rooms.

The hotel’s ballroom foyer is decorated with artwork commemorating veterans’ service along with the medical achievements made by famed Houston heart surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey.

Dr. DeBakey served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in World War II. During the Korean War, Dr. DeBakey helped develop the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) units, placing medical care near the front lines, which significantly improved the survival rate of wounded soldiers.
