New Hotel Opens Near Texas Medical Center in Houston

HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – American Liberty Hospitality will open a new 10-story hotel on the campus of the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center at 6840 Almeda Road, near Holcombe Boulevard, on Thursday.

The 300-room property, situated across from the former Nabisco factory, is a dual-branded development combining a Hilton Garden Inn and Home2 Suites by Hilton.

Located on federal VA land within the Texas Medical Center complex, the hotel is intended to serve patients, families, medical staff and veterans who visit the campus.

“We’re honored to be on the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus, surrounded by some of the top medical institutions on the planet,” said Nick Massad III, senior vice president of development at American Liberty Hospitality. “Our hotel has been designed to meet the special needs of this unique medical community and was developed, in part, to enhance the campus and help better serve our cherished vets.”

The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center is operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and is one of the VA’s largest hospitals, serving Harris County and 27 surrounding counties.

Buy Local; Build Local

Houston-based American Liberty Hospitality, led by Nick Massad Jr., has emphasized local partnerships and community investment. Earlier this year the company opened another dual-branded high-rise hotel along Loop 610 near the Galleria.

Reflecting that local focus, Houston-based MCS Architects designed the new tower and Houston-based Arch-Con Corporation served as general contractor.

The property includes 143 extended-stay suites in the Home2 Suites side, each equipped with a full-size refrigerator with ice maker, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishwasher and basic kitchenware. The Hilton Garden Inn component offers 157 rooms.

Public spaces include a ballroom foyer adorned with artwork honoring veterans and highlighting medical achievements associated with famed Houston heart surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey.

Dr. DeBakey served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II and later contributed to the development of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) units during the Korean War, bringing surgical care closer to the front lines and improving survival rates for wounded soldiers.
