Amazon Plans 1M-Square-Foot Distribution Hub Near Houston

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – (Realty News Report) – Amazon is expanding its nationwide distribution network and will open a new 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center in Missouri City on Houston’s southwest side.

The facility, expected to open in roughly one year, will be located at 2303 Hurricane Lane near the intersection of the Fort Bend Tollway and Highway 6.

Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment, said the company expects to create more than 500 jobs for the local community, offering competitive pay and comprehensive benefits from day one.

At this fulfillment center, employees will pick, pack, and ship larger or bulky customer items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment, and rugs.

Online shopping surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, accelerating e-commerce market share while brick-and-mortar retailers work to bring customers back into stores. Amazon has been rapidly increasing hiring to keep pace with demand; the company added 100,000 workers in March 2020 alone.

Amazon, which employs roughly 43,000 people in Texas, continues to build new distribution sites across the state. In Pflugerville, a suburb of Austin, the company is developing a 3.8-million-square-foot distribution complex on 94 acres near State Highway 130.

An 850,000-square-foot fulfillment center is also under construction in Richmond in Fort Bend County.

“Missouri City and Amazon share priorities such as success, diversity, customer service, and community,” said Missouri City Mayor Yolanda Ford. “We welcome this new business model focused on customer service and economic expansion. This partnership will strengthen our commercial tax base and help ease the property tax burden on residents. Growing our economic base is a priority for citizens and the City Council, and this Amazon center is another important step forward for Missouri City’s economy.”

Amazon’s pay starts at a minimum of $15 per hour, and full‑time employees receive extensive benefits immediately, including medical, vision, and dental coverage, plus a 401(k) plan with a 50 percent company match starting on day one.
