Dynamic Art Program added at City Place

City Place Adds Dynamic Art Program

In Houston, Art helps a community thrive. Toward that, North Houston’s City Place has launched a public art initiative that will incorporate a mix of permanent and pop-up art installations throughout the 2,000-acre multi-use development.

The public art ahead will encompass engaging, thought-provoking and sometimes amusing public works. And they’ll add a little “wonder” to the wanderings through the development’s urban core, waterways, nature preserve and residential enclaves.

Developer CDC Houston and Harris County Improvement District 18 teamed up with public art expert Weingarten Art Group on creating a long-term plan and vision for the visuals.

“The City Place team is inspired by the simple premise that some of the most intriguing art may be experienced in everyday life, outside the confines of a museum or gallery,” said Lea Weingarten, principal in Weingarten Art Group.

In other words, City Place’s sustainable community is a “canvas” awaiting installations that complement its character and vibrancy, she said.

The first installation, a vivid and site-specific piece entitled “Periwinkle,” made its debut earlier this month and is slated to be the first of several exhibitions this year. As created by Dallas- and Austin-based The Color Condition, the inaugural elements feature a series of “fantastical realms” inspired by childhood games (Candyland) and literary characters (Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland).

Weingarten Art Group’s expertise in public art projects reaches nationally. Houston area examples include Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Park and Hermann Park.

City Place, formerly Springwoods Village – is located at the axis of the Grand Parkway, Hardy Toll Road and Interstate 45. Its 2,000 acres span protected forests and natural ecosystems that coexist within the built environment.

With the addition of dynamic public art, the community for business, leisure and living can now add another group to its environment: visitors.
