Historic Galvez Renovation Fuels Galveston’s Revival

GALVESTON – (Realty News Report) – The historic Galvez Hotel, renamed the Grand Galvez, is undergoing a careful restoration that owner and hotelier Mark Wyant expects to be completed in 2022. The Gulf-facing, 220-room landmark, which originally opened in 1911, sits on Seawall Boulevard at 20th Street, directly across from the Gulf of Mexico.

“We have great respect for the iconic architecture of this property,” Wyant said. “Our vision for the new Grand Galvez will honor the historic design while delivering a refreshed elegance throughout the hotel.”

Mark Wyant and his wife, interior designer Lorenda Wyant, are leading the design direction for the Grand Galvez. The couple has worked together on other hotel projects, including properties in the Saint Hotels collection, and on private residences.

Renovation work already underway covers all guest rooms, hospitality spaces and public areas. The design approach emphasizes an elegant, resort-appropriate palette that complements Galveston Island’s coastal character. Despite the renovations, the hotel and spa continue to accept reservations and remain fully operational for guest stays, weddings, dining and special events.

During the project, crews uncovered original moldings and ceiling details hidden inside walls—features that have not been exposed since 1962. Restoration efforts are returning those elements to view. A new bar will be located in the west loggia, offering views of Peacock Alley and the Gulf of Mexico.

Breaking News: Galveston Tourism Advances

Wyant’s company, Seawall Hospitality LLC, acquired the Grand Galvez from heirs of Galveston-born oilman and developer George P. Mitchell in March 2021. Mitchell, a major figure in the region’s development, was also the developer behind The Woodlands master-planned community and contributed to the restoration of several historic buildings in The Strand.

Galveston has a long-established tourism industry and has attracted investment from hospitality and entertainment developers. On Saturday, city officials and representatives of Royal Caribbean marked the groundbreaking for a new $110 million, 170,000-square-foot cruise terminal. The facility is expected to accommodate larger cruise ships and expand berth capacity, potentially attracting additional cruise lines. The terminal will be built on a 10-acre site ground-leased from the city as a 50-50 joint venture between Royal Caribbean Group and Macquarie’s Ceres Terminals.

The Finishing Touches at Grand Galvez

According to Grand Galvez publicity materials, guest rooms are designed to offer a tranquil, casual opulence intended to soothe and refresh. Rooms use a white-and-indigo-blue color scheme with accents in tropical green and white palm patterns. White lacquered and mirrored furnishings are complemented by light sky-blue ceilings, while king and queen pillow-top beds feature a custom mirrored headwall that extends to the ceiling. Guest amenities will include Egyptian cotton linens, down duvets, complimentary in-room Wi-Fi and Niven Morgan signature bath products and robes.

Public spaces will feature white marble flooring with black inlay and crystal chandeliers to reinforce the hotel’s revived sense of grandeur. One notable restoration is Peacock Alley, the grand walkway that leads from the lobby to the spa and ballroom; this prominent design element has not been present in the hotel for more than 70 years. The new Peacock Alley boutique will offer a curated selection of gifts, apparel and keepsakes for visitors to take home.

“The renovations create a feeling of luxury and sophistication that harks back to the original hotel’s grandeur,” said Lorenda Wyant.

Wyant, who is based in Dallas, previously owned two Holiday Inn properties in Galveston. Under the new ownership, the Grand Galvez will join the Marriott Autograph Collection.
