DALLAS – (Realty News Report) – AECOM, a major design and engineering firm, is relocating its corporate headquarters from Los Angeles to Dallas.
This move continues a broader corporate trend of companies leaving California for states perceived as more business-friendly with lower taxes, notably Texas. Recent headquarters relocations to Texas include CBRE to Dallas, Oracle to Austin, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise to City Place (formerly Springwoods Village) north of Houston.
A Fortune 500 company with $13.2 billion in annual revenue, AECOM does not plan to transfer a large number of employees from Los Angeles. However, CEO Troy Rudd and other senior leaders will join AECOM’s existing Dallas workforce at Galleria Tower One, 13355 Noel Road, a building developed by Hines in 1982.
Dallas has attracted several prominent corporate headquarters from California in recent years, including Toyota North America, Charles Schwab, McKesson, Core-Mark and Jacobs Engineering.
With AECOM’s move, Dallas now hosts the headquarters of three of the nation’s largest engineering design firms: Jacobs, AECOM and Fluor, according to the Dallas Morning News and Engineering News-Record. AECOM employs approximately 47,000 people worldwide.
“AECOM’s California clients and communities will continue to benefit from the company’s 2,500 employees based at its downtown Los Angeles office and other offices throughout the state,” AECOM said in a statement. “AECOM has maintained a longstanding presence in both California and Texas, with our professionals delivering transformational projects that uplift communities and improve quality of life. While the North Texas region today provides AECOM additional advantages as a corporate hub and talent magnet for the engineering and consulting industry, both markets remain central to the company’s growth strategy.”
Texas and Florida have become major destinations in recent domestic migration patterns, while California and New York have seen net losses—trends highlighted in recent U.S. Census Bureau reports.
From mid-2019 to mid-2020, the U.S. population grew by about 1.15 million people. Texas and Florida together accounted for roughly 600,000 of that increase, representing more than half of the nation’s population growth during that period.
