New Owner Renames Historic Hotel Galvez: What Changes to Expect

GALVESTON — (Realty News Report) – The historic Hotel Galvez has been renamed the Grand Galvez Resort & Spa under new ownership.

The 200-room hotel, which opened in 1911, sits along Seawall Boulevard directly across from the Gulf of Mexico near 20th Street.

Dallas hotelier Mark Wyant, through Seawall Hospitality LLC, recently completed the purchase of the landmark property from the heirs of Galveston-born developer and oilman George P. Mitchell.

Mitchell, who died in 2013 at age 93, was responsible for redeveloping many historic structures on Galveston Island, including buildings in The Strand.

Mitchell also developed The Woodlands and played a major role in advancing hydraulic fracturing as an oil and gas extraction technique.

“I recognize and respect this property’s long and storied history,” said Mark Wyant, owner of Seawall Hospitality LLC. “Renaming the property the Grand Galvez Resort & Spa reflects the refreshed energy and renovations I plan to bring to the resort and its amenities.”

Wyant said his goal is to preserve the hotel’s distinctive architectural character while elevating its luxury and appeal, attracting more visitors to the Grand Galvez Resort & Spa and to Galveston.

Thanks to its prime beachfront location, the iconic hotel will remain a prominent island landmark. The Grand Galvez will continue to serve as a premier venue for weddings, corporate events and both business and leisure travelers. Planned renovations and new additions aim to deliver an elegant experience unmatched locally. Renderings of the proposed updates are being finalized and will be released in the coming weeks.

“My plans include renovating guest rooms and public spaces and adding new entertainment venues that will bring added vitality to the Grand Galvez Resort & Spa,” Wyant said.

The resort will join the Marriott Autograph Collection.

A Dallas native, Wyant is an experienced hotel owner and developer with properties and projects in Texas, Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina. This purchase marks his third development in Galveston. In 1999 he built a Holiday Inn Express at 1st and Seawall and sold it in 2005. In 2004 he developed the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort on the site once occupied by Capt. Jack’s; he sold that property in 2014. Wyant later founded The Saint Hotel brand, with award-winning properties in New Orleans, Key West and Charleston. He has recently sold The Saint New Orleans and is completing construction on The Saint Hotel Charleston.

Wyant, a history enthusiast, targets development opportunities in U.S. cities known for their heritage and strong leisure, business and cultural offerings. In each historic setting he seeks to honor the site’s legacy, charm and local history.

The Mitchell organization also announced in March that it sold the Tremont House in Galveston’s Strand District. The Tremont was acquired by Hospitality Asset Funding Group, a partnership between SRH Hospitality of Addison and JLM Financial Investments of Austin.
