World’s Largest Nissan Dealership Sparks South Loop Revival?

The largest Nissan dealership in the world.

HOUSTON – (By Michelle Leigh Smith for Realty News Report) – Central Automotive Group has unveiled a 162,500-square-foot expansion at its Astrodome-area campus, creating what is now the largest Nissan dealership in the world.

Located at 2901 South Loop West, the project occupies 16 acres with roughly one-third of a mile of frontage along the 610 South Loop. The striking facility, finished in Nissan’s signature red, white and glossy black, includes a showroom that can display up to 60 vehicles. It sits in the heart of the city’s “Car Row” on the south side of the Loop, positioned east of Golden Corral and west of Pappadeaux, Pappasito’s and Cavender’s.

“The economy is strong and this facility will allow us to provide our customers an unprecedented level of service with a buying experience second to none,” said Fernando J. Somoza, platform president and managing partner of Central Automotive Group. Dealer Principal Ricardo Weitz and José Valls, Nissan chairman of Nissan North America, hosted about 1,000 guests at the recent opening event.

“This is the latest and largest Nissan dealership in the U.S., and it’s right here in Houston, Texas,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner.

The Nissan location originally opened in 1979, at a time when many of Houston’s once-popular evening spots on South Main—places like Bill Williams, Sonny Look’s Sirloin House, Kaphan’s and Valian’s—had already closed. The area near the Astrodome was once famous for Saturday night drag races on the empty streets and for classic local hangouts such as Prince’s Drive In and Ye Old College Inn.

The best access today is via the Buffalo Speedway exit, west of Kirby Drive, one of Houston’s most recognized corridors. The site is well-served by METRO rail and is within convenient walking distance of the Fannin South station on the Red Line, with nearby parking at the large Fannin South Transit Center. The Red Line links this area just south of NRG to downtown, the Texas Medical Center, the Museum District, Midtown and northbound to UHD and HCC. Extensions to the Green and Purple lines further enhance connectivity.

The city’s rail network now spans about 23 miles, expanding from the original 7.5-mile Red Line to include the Green and Purple lines.

Given its proximity to major employment hubs such as the Texas Medical Center and its excellent transit connections, the South Loop draws heavy traffic. Still, some neighborhood leaders, including civic association representatives in City District K and Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum, say they are not aware of other major development plans to upgrade surrounding properties.

That raises the question: why hasn’t the South Loop’s built environment advanced further?

KPRC news anchor Dominique Sachse shared a nostalgic memory of her first car, a 1976 Chevy Camaro, and recalled her admiration for the Datsun 280Z: “I remember the first time I saw a 280Z—that car was the bomb,” she said. “I can’t wait to see what Nissan will bring out next.”

At the grand opening, Nissan paired past and future by parking a Black Pearl GT-X—a $120,000, high-performance model—nose-to-nose with an original Datsun 280ZX. The matchup highlighted how the modern sports car carries forward the spirit of its predecessor.

Designed by Kirksey Architects, the dealership emphasizes clean, elegant lines combined with practical functionality. The customer experience centers around multiple lounge areas—three separate lounges—a dedicated entertainment center, two coffee and tea bars, and a children’s play area, all laid out for convenience and comfort.

Employing more than 200 people, Central Houston Nissan at 2901 S. Loop W. has become Central Automotive Group’s flagship location. The group’s portfolio also includes Baytown Nissan (5445 I-10 E), South Houston Nissan (11911 Gulf Freeway) and South Austin Nissan (4914 S I-35). Together the dealerships generate more than $14 million annually in sales tax revenue for the City of Houston and the State of Texas.

Central Houston Nissan is the only Nissan dealer in the city to offer its Central Care package to all customers, which includes two years of complimentary maintenance, lifetime car washes, road hazard tire protection, emergency roadside assistance and lifetime loaner vehicles. The dealership also provides a complimentary pick-up and delivery concierge service for maintenance and repairs.

The new facility includes a collision center with one of the city’s few aluminum-certified repair bays and features a climate-controlled service drive—unique among Houston dealerships.
