GALVESTON, Texas – Hotelier Mark Wyant, known for restoring and operating historic properties, has agreed to acquire the landmark Hotel Galvez and Spa on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston.
Opened in 1911, the hotel sits just across the street from the Gulf of Mexico shoreline and has long been a signature destination for visitors to the island.
Wyant, principal of Seawall Hospitality LLC, is set to purchase the property from the heirs of Galveston-born oilman and developer George P. Mitchell. The transaction is scheduled to close on May 12.
George Mitchell’s Historic Properties
The Mitchell family recently sold another historic Galveston hotel, the Tremont House, to Hospitality Asset Funding Group, a joint venture between SRH Hospitality of Addison and JLM Financial Investments of Austin. George P. Mitchell, who passed away in 2013 at age 93, played a major role in redeveloping numerous historic buildings across Galveston, especially in The Strand district.
The 200-room Hotel Galvez, near 20th Street, remains an important part of Galveston Island’s tourism mix, which has seen growth in recent years alongside the expansion of the cruise ship industry.
Wyant, based in Dallas, is an experienced owner and developer with projects across Texas, Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina. He founded The Saint Hotel brand and has developed Saint properties in New Orleans, Key West and Charleston. He recently sold The Saint New Orleans and is finalizing construction on The Saint Hotel Charleston.
The Galvez Renovation
“With its unparalleled location, I want to ensure the iconic Hotel Galvez and Spa remains a cherished landmark that complements Galveston’s history and beauty,” Wyant said. “This property is a beloved venue for weddings, corporate events, business and leisure travelers. My plans include renovating guest rooms and interior public spaces and adding new entertainment venues to introduce fresh energy while honoring the hotel’s legacy.”

“I will respect the hotel’s distinctive architecture while bringing renewed energy to the property,” Wyant added. “I have a deep appreciation for Galveston and its reputation for exceptional hospitality. My goal is to preserve the Hotel Galvez and Spa’s historic character while updating its offerings to meet today’s guest expectations.”
Details about the specific renovation plans and new amenities will be announced in the coming weeks.
A history enthusiast, Wyant intentionally selects projects in U.S. cities with rich historic character and strong leisure, business and cultural appeal. In each location he works to preserve the legacy, charm and stories that make those places unique.
