Elon Musk Firm Builds Massive Battery Plant Near Houston

ANGLETON, Texas – A Tesla subsidiary, Gambit Energy Storage, is building a large utility-scale battery facility that will connect to the Texas electric grid, according to recent reports.

The project is a 100-megawatt energy storage installation that, at peak discharge, could supply power to roughly 20,000 homes on a typical summer day, Bloomberg News reported.

Planned for completion this year, the battery park will be capable of discharging electricity into the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system via the Texas-New Mexico Power Company’s Angleton Substation at W. Locust and N. Walker Street.

The new facility comes after last winter’s extreme cold event that strained the Texas grid and led to widespread outages. The crisis prompted sharp criticism of ERCOT’s management and operations; in its aftermath, ERCOT’s CEO was removed from his post. Several businesses across the state, including some Tesla operations, reported impacts from the outages.

Gambit Energy Storage’s project, called the Gambit Energy Storage Park, is sited about 40 miles south of Houston, west of Highway 288 off Murray Ranch Road. The facility will store electricity when prices are low or when renewable generation is abundant and discharge stored power when demand and prices spike or when the grid faces shortfalls.

Large-scale battery storage is a key element in efforts to integrate variable renewable energy sources and improve grid flexibility and resilience. By absorbing excess generation and supplying power during periods of high demand, battery parks help smooth fluctuations and can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants.

Elon Musk and his companies have been expanding operations in Texas in recent years. Tesla is building a large vehicle manufacturing complex in the Austin area that is expected to employ thousands, and Musk has relocated his personal residence to the state. SpaceX also maintains significant operations in Texas. The Gambit project represents another example of energy infrastructure growth tied to Tesla-affiliated ventures.

The Angleton battery park will operate as a grid asset that can respond quickly to changes in supply and demand. When energy prices fall—often during periods of high solar production—operators can charge the batteries. During evening peak demand or sudden generation shortfalls, the facility can discharge stored energy into the grid, supporting reliability and potentially reducing price volatility for consumers.

As states and utilities pursue decarbonization and grid modernization, utility-scale energy storage projects like Gambit’s are increasingly viewed as essential to manage intermittency from wind and solar resources and to strengthen grid performance during extreme weather events.
