SAN ANTONIO – (Realty News Report) – Ohana Real Estate Investors, a firm specializing in full-service hotel investments, has acquired La Cantera Resort & Spa, a 496-room resort in San Antonio, from USAA Real Estate.
Sitting on 550 acres at the highest elevation point in San Antonio, La Cantera Resort & Spa features expansive views of the Texas Hill Country and is close to the city’s cultural attractions. Originally designed with rustic, King Ranch–style interiors, the resort underwent extensive multi‑million‑dollar renovations in 2015 to refresh its aesthetic with a contemporary Texas sensibility.
La Cantera’s Two Golf Courses
“USAA Real Estate established the resort as a top destination in Texas and North America, and we look forward to continuing that success under our ownership,” said Franco Famularo, Chief Investment Officer at Ohana, based in Redwood City, California.
The resort provides a wide range of amenities, including two championship golf courses, 12 dining venues — such as Signature, inspired by acclaimed chef Andrew Weissman — Loma de Vida Spa & Wellness, a 25,000-square-foot spa, six pools with private cabanas, and 34 villas set among the property’s tree groves.
Stroll Among the Mesquites
Guests can explore walking trails shaded by native oak, mesquite and pine trees, with metal art installations by Texas artisans placed throughout the landscape.
La Cantera has been part of USAA Real Estate’s holdings and served as the cornerstone of the 1,700-acre La Cantera community since the firm developed the project in 1999.
USAA Real Estate led a comprehensive reimagination of the property in 2015 and 2016, enhancing the resort’s amenities across its 630 acres. Improvements highlighted some of San Antonio’s notable dining and recreation offerings, including Signature Restaurant, Loma de Vida Spa, multiple pools, and 36 holes of golf across the Resort Course and the Palmer Course.
That repositioning helped establish La Cantera as a leading luxury resort in the region, and it has continued to see strong demand in the post‑COVID travel recovery, after the hotel sector suffered throughout the pandemic.
“La Cantera Resort is and will always be special to USAA Real Estate because we developed and nurtured it for decades in our own backyard, giving it an unrivaled sense of place in our La Cantera master development,” said USAA Real Estate President & CEO Len O’Donnell. “We took particular care to ensure that the new owners would be the ideal stewards of the property, and as such, we could not be more pleased to have concluded this transaction with Ohana.”
