Law Firm Signs Lease in Texas’ Tallest Office Tower

The 600 Travis building is the tallest building in Texas.

HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – Colvill Office Properties has completed a lease renewal with Hunton Andrews Kurth for 134,763 square feet at 600 Travis, the 75‑story Class A office tower in Houston’s Central Business District.

Developed and managed by Hines, the tower remains one of the most prominent office addresses in Texas.

Hunton Andrews Kurth, a Texas‑based international law firm founded in 1902, has been a tenant in the 1.6 million‑square‑foot tower since it opened in 1981.

In April 2018, Hunton & Williams LLP merged with Andrews Kurth Kenyon LLP to form Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. The firm maintains roughly 300 attorneys across four Texas offices, more than 200 attorneys in Richmond, and in excess of 150 attorneys in both New York and Washington.

“We have been deeply rooted in Houston for more than 100 years,” said Tammy Brennig, Houston managing partner of Hunton Andrews Kurth. “600 Travis has been our home for nearly 40 years, and we are pleased that it will continue to be our home.”

CBRE’s Charles Gordon and Paul Penland represented Hunton Andrews Kurth in the lease negotiation. Clark Thompson, Diana Bridger and Margaret Elkins of Colvill Office Properties represented the building’s owner, Prime Asset Management.

I.M. Pei & Partners designed the tower in collaboration with Ziegler Cooper Architects. The building has previously been known as the JPMorgan Chase Tower and, earlier, the Texas Commerce Tower.

600 Travis occupies the block bounded by Texas, Capitol, Milam and Travis streets. Hines is also developing a 47‑story office tower across the street on the site that formerly housed the Houston Chronicle at 801 Texas Avenue. In addition, Hines has applied for permits to construct a 46‑story residential tower on the half‑block that once served as the Chronicle’s parking garage on Block 42, bounded by Milam, Preston and Prairie streets.

At 1,002 feet tall, the 75‑story tower was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River when it opened, though it was later surpassed by a taller tower in California.

Situated near Houston’s Theater District, 600 Travis features a large outdoor plaza anchored by a monumental Joan Miró sculpture titled “Personage and Birds.” The piece is the largest Miró sculpture ever commissioned and serves as a striking focal point for the plaza.

Colvill Office Properties, which specializes in landlord representation for downtown office buildings, manages leasing for several towers in Houston’s central business district.
