Le Méridien Houston Downtown – Fresh Take on a Vintage Hotel

HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – New management has been appointed for Le Méridien Houston Downtown, a hotel located in a historic building designed by the architects behind the Astrodome.

Development Service Group (DSG), an Atlanta-based hospitality developer, converted the 21-story midcentury office tower into a hotel a few years ago.

The hotel occupies a 1950s-era office building near GreenStreet and Brookfield’s Houston Center. Originally known as the Melrose Building, the tower had sat vacant for about 20 years before Development Service Group transformed it into a hotel.

Completed in 1952, the Melrose Building stands at 1121 Walker Street between Fannin and San Jacinto streets.

The 255-room hotel is housed within the historic Melrose Building, which was the first Houston skyscraper designed in the International style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Le Méridien Houston Downtown blends modern design with European influences and offers 11,027 square feet of meeting and event space.

The Melrose Building was designed by architects Hermon Lloyd and William B. Morgan, prominent Houston designers responsible for major projects including the Astrodome and the Allen Center development.

Le Méridien Houston Downtown showcases contemporary interiors with European touches and provides 11,027 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, along with three food-and-beverage outlets, including the award-winning Z on23 Rooftop Lounge.

The property’s owner has selected Davidson Hotels & Resorts to manage Le Méridien Houston Downtown. The hotel will be operated by Davidson’s lifestyle and luxury division, Pivot Hotels & Resorts.

“This highly styled hotel, with creative food-and-beverage offerings and strong potential for innovative programming, plays to the strengths of Pivot Hotels & Resorts,” said Thom Geshay, President of Davidson Hotels & Resorts. “We look forward to growing market share, improving profitability and enhancing the guest experience.”

Pivot Hotels & Resorts focuses on independent and branded properties in the upper-upscale to luxury segments.

“We are very confident in Pivot’s ability to serve as stewards for this exceptional, architecturally significant property,” said Gary Prosterman, President of DSG, Inc., the hotel owner.

Davidson Hotels & Resorts currently manages 61 hotels and resorts, operates more than 120 restaurants, bars and lounges, and oversees nearly 1.5 million square feet of meeting space across the United States.
