HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – Houston real estate broker Bill Burge announces the sale of the 7-acre Men’s Wearhouse distribution center and corporate office.
The property was purchased by SER-Niños Charter School, which plans to redevelop the site into a high school to serve the local community.
The 141,258-square-foot building at 5803 Glenmont Drive sits in the Gulfton neighborhood, between Chimney Rock and Hillcroft avenues, on the south side of the Southwest Freeway.
Jason Dillee and Nathan Wynne of CBRE represented the seller, Tailored Brands, the parent company of Men’s Wearhouse. Tailored Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August amid the economic pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, which hit many brick-and-mortar retailers hard. Men’s Wearhouse subsequently closed hundreds of stores, reduced staff, and emerged from bankruptcy in December.
Bill Burge represented SER-Niños Charter School in the acquisition. SER-Niños already operates two elementary campuses and a middle school in the Gulfton area and intends to expand its educational offerings by converting this facility into a high school.
SER-Niños was founded in 1996 by Dianne Mancus in collaboration with the Houston Hispanic Forum and local community members. In its first year, SER-Niños opened on the Bellaire Christian Church campus in the heart of the Gulfton community, enrolling 155 students from Pre-K through fourth grade. The school added fifth grade in 1997 and expanded to include a middle school in 2004.
SER-Niños was among the first wave of charter schools established in Texas, focused on serving the educational needs of the Gulfton neighborhood and surrounding areas.
