MIDLAND, Texas – Houston-based Midway Companies is expanding into the Permian Basin with a new hospitality project.
The proposed hotel will include 200 rooms and will be located in downtown Midland, roughly 500 miles west of Houston. The Midland City Council has approved the project and authorized approximately $15 million in incentives to support the development.
The hotel will be a redevelopment of the historic Western United Life building, constructed in 1948 and designed by architect Wyatt Hedrick. Hedrick is known for designing notable Houston landmarks such as the Sam Houston Hotel and the former Houston National Bank building, the latter of which was later purchased by basketball star Hakeem Olajuwon and converted into the Islamic Da’wah Center of Houston.
Midway has an established track record in hotel development. The firm developed the Hotel Alessandra as part of the GreenStreet mixed-use project in downtown Houston and the Hotel Sorella within its CityCentre complex in west Houston. Recently, Midway rebranded the Sorella as The Moran at CityCentre and selected HEI Hotels as the new management company.
HEI Hotels will also manage the Midland property for Midway.
Other hotels in Midway’s portfolio include Calvary Court and The George in College Station, the Four Points by Sheraton at CityCentre, and a proposed hotel in its East River project.
