Report: Southwest Operated 56 Empty Flights on March 30

DALLAS – (Realty News Report) – Southwest Airlines flew 56 empty flights on a difficult day for the airline industry, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Dallas Business Journal.

The 56 passenger-free flights occurred on Monday, March 30, based on reporting by Evan Hoopfer of the Dallas Business Journal. A Southwest spokesperson declined to comment on the story, which cited an internal company memo.

Southwest recently announced it would cut about 1,500 flights per day from its schedule and maintain the reduced operations into early June.

Southwest is a major carrier serving the Houston market and operates from Hobby Airport. Most U.S. airlines have continued limited flight operations despite dramatically reduced passenger demand. Airlines sometimes operate empty legs to reposition aircraft and crew for future flights or to carry cargo.

Shares of Southwest closed at $30.54 on Friday, down $0.96. The airline’s 52-week high was $58.83.
